I jus purchased this for my MacBook Pro retina early 2013 model. It is 16GB ram and has a 512GB SS hard drive. From what I understand I bring up my MacBook Pro and go to Time Machine and plug in the WD drive. Then follow the prompts for back up. Is this correct?

This is suppose to be already formatted for MAC. There is an old back-up from the previous owner.

Do I just click on my new drive and continue? After mine is complete can I delete the other back-up and be okay? Everything is in my Apple ID and name on Applecare I purchased. Apple deauthorized the previous owners Apple ID as I had the email address and original receipt from the previous owner when it was purchased. Me delete his user account so it is now associated with my ID. They also said it wasn't necessary to do anything else but do the initial back-up. Any hints or anything I missed?

The original back-up of mine will probably take a few hours-right? Thanks so much. Do I have to wipe the computer back to factory settings before I do the back-up? I am scared to mess it up now that it should be all set in my name. I will call Apple and have them walk me through it if you feel I need to.

It is running 10.8.5 OS which would have only had the one update since Mountain Lion 10.8.2 OS was installed new on it. I have not upgraded to Maverick as I have only owned it since the beginning of November 2013. No files of the previous owner are on it. I removed the printer on it. It does have Microsoft Office for Mac that I am sure he bought.

I will lose it but I can always re-buy it if needed. No files under Microsoft Office under the previous owner either. The computer only had 6 battery cycles and looks just like new. I love it and the retina display is a Samsung.

Thank you all for helping all of us new to MacBooks. I own iPad 4 and am familiar to their products for several years. The iPads are a piece of cake to reset.Thanks. No files of the previous owner are on it.

But you said, There is an old back-up from the previous owner. Even if it is just a listing it shows the computer was not wiped before transferring to you, otherwise it would look as if it had never been used before, not show the footprint of earlier backups. Unless you trust that person 100% you do not know what else is still on there.

There could be utilities that installed components. In a truly worst-case scenario there could be a keylogger or some other malware. It's up to you, I'm just observing that your backup may not be as pristine as you wish. Apple Footer.
